Our trash contractor is TrashAway.

Trash pickup on Tuesday Mornings and Friday Mornings may potentially start at 6am!  

Recycling is picked up on Tuesday Morning; you should have a blue TrashAway recycling bin.

Trash is picked up on Tuesday Morning (starting at 6am) and Friday Morning (starting at 6am).

The only exceptions to Tuesday and Friday pickups are Christmas Day [December 25] and New Year's Day [January 1].

Trash should only be put out between 7:00 pm the night before and 6:00 am the day of pickup anshould be placed in covered garbge cans or tied garbage bags.

When not out for collection, trash, trashcans and recycle bins should be stored behind your house, out of sight from the front.

Types of waste:

Newspapers: Bundle newspapers in paper bags or tie with strong twine. Do not use plastic bags! Do not exceed 30 pounds per bundle. Phone books are picked up annually after the new books come out.

Glass bottles: Rinse out food residue and remove caps and lids. It is not necessary to remove labels or metal rings. No need to separate green, brown, amber and clear. Dishes, plates, window glass, pottery and light bulbs are not acceptable.

Aluminum and metal cans: Rinse first; it's OK to crush. Cardboard juice containers, aerosol cans, paint cans, tray and pans are not acceptable.

Plastic containers: Rinse first. Acceptable: #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) plastic jugs or bottles (the number is on the bottom of the container in the recycling container). Tubs, Styrofoam, bags, wraps, medicine bottles and oil containers are not acceptable.

Yard waste is picked up with trash. It can be in cans, bags, or bundles not exceeding four feet in length.

Unacceptable items: Rocks, concrete, dirt, sod, tree stumps, paint, motor oil, fencing, construction debris, combustibles or toxic wastes.

Household Hazardous Waste: Fairfax County has two locations which accept hazardous waste (such as acids, asbestos, rechargeable batteries, pesticides and more). See the County's Waste Types and Household Hazardous Waste pages for details.
